The government has initiated its long-signalled reforms to New Zealand’s resource management regime.
LBPs are not expected to be experts in the Resource Management Act 1991, but they should have a good working knowledge of the rules applying to the land they are working on.
From firing up requirements for thermal insulation to cooling down prospects for building on prime farm land, plenty of building rules have been updated or introduced in the last year with more to come in 2023.
The long-awaited changes to the Resource Management Act have been unveiled with the release of two new proposed Bills. For the construction sector, the intention to streamline the consenting process should be welcome.
Although it is too early to assess the three new pieces of legislation that will replace the Resource Management Act, there are key areas of focus emerging in the reform of our resource management system.
