Maintenance and servicing work
Maintenance and servicing work that may involve ACM includes:
● repairing or replacing sheets of cement roo ng that are damaged
● replacing damaged or deteriorated cement water pipes
● drilling or cutting into so ts or wall linings.
Building maintenance or servicing is allowed without a licence under the new regulations. However, if this involves removing over 10 m2 of non- friable asbestos or any amount of friable asbestos, a licence is required. Removing friable asbestos
This work includes:
● removal of insulation materials, including lagging
● anyremovaltaskwheretheasbestosisinapowderformwhendry
or able to be crumbled or reduced to a powder using your hands. A Class A licence will be required because the asbestos  bres are friable and you could be exposed to larger quantities of airborne  bres.
Always minimise risks
All removal work needs to be performed safely. Suitable controls need to be in place to ensure that the risks of asbestos have been minimised.
These include:
● correctlyusingpersonalprotectiveequipment(PPE)
● havingrespiratoryprotectiveequipment(RPE)
● havingsafeworkmethods
● havingdecontaminationfacilities
● disposing all asbestos waste in a licensed land ll.

If you have a current certi cate of competence, you don’t need to do anything yet. Your certi cate will allow you to work under the

● any amount of non-friable asbestos
or ACM.
No licence required
● Up to and including 10 m2 of non- friable asbestos or ACM cumulatively over the course of the removal project for the site.
● ACD that is:
● associated with removing 10 m2 or
less of non-friable asbestos or ACM
● any associated minor ACD.
