Facilities managers largely operate under the radar, yet their skills keep our commercial buildings running smoothly. An industry association and new tertiary course are raising the pro le of these important industry players.

Industry roles
HOT-OFF-THE-PRESS research indicates that facilities management in New Zealand is a major industry worth close to $9 billion or just under 4% of GDP.
With around 90% of our lives estimated to be spent indoors, e ective facilities manage- ment has huge bene ts both at a societal and individual level.
Diverse wide-ranging role
There seems to be confusion over what facili- ties management is because it embraces such a diverse range of activities, including:
