Sustainability awards
The sustainable aspects of concrete were showcased recently in major national awards. The winner was an aesthetically attractive and sustainable regional sports centre, which made use of aggregate from local rock.
WARREN AND MAHONEY ARCHITECTS took out the Cement & Concrete Association (CCANZ) 2015 Supreme Concrete3 Sustainability Award for the EA Networks Centre in Ashburton, a multi-purpose indoor sports and aquatics complex.
The judges applauded Warren and Mahoney Architects’ use of concrete to achieve durable permanence, thermal e ciency, an attractive aesthetic as well as exibility in a large community facility serving mid-Canterbury.
Locally sourced greywacke aggregate by Ashburton precast concrete company McIntosh Precast ensured social sustain- ability values and addressed environment- ally sustainable design principles.
Concrete’s thermal mass is exposed in the entrance foyer as part of a passive solar thermal strategy, while insulated concrete wall panels in the front moderate temperature variations.
The Awards are part of the Concrete3 initiative launched in 2007 by CCANZ and acknowledge projects, products and initiatives demonstrating excellence in environmental, economic and social sustainability for the built environment.
Other category winners:
● Excellence in Concrete Innovation – Allied
Concrete for its EPD for ready-mixed concrete using Holcim (NZ) manufactured cement.
● Excellence in Civil Concrete Construction – Wilco Precast for the EcoRetainer, an interlocking precast concrete block with a bale of waste compressed tyres encapsulated within. This is a rapid, cost- e ective civil engineering solution.
● Excellence in Residential Concrete Construction – Studio Paci c Architecture for Rawhiti Sleepout in the Bay of Islands. Most of the building is made of concrete, providing su cient strength to support
a green roof and meet the client’s brief for longevity and environmental responsiveness.
● Excellence in Commercial Concrete Construction – Nauhria Precast for Carlaw Park Student Village self-contained apartments. The use of concrete provided e ciency in construction, architectural appeal and thermal bene ts as well as a low maintenance schedule.
